Sphingosylphosphorylcholine induces release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores via an IP3 independent pathway in permeabilized pancreatic acinar cells. It is an extremely potent mitogen in numerous cell types and induces neurite outgrowth in mouse neuroblastoma cells. It rapidly activates transcription factor AP-14 and transiently activates MAP kinase.
