Ubiquitin is a 76 amino acid protein, which when covalently linked to proteins as a branched chain, serves as a tag marking proteins for a variety of cellular activities. Its primary sequence is remarkably conserved, with only three amino acid changes between the yeast and human sequences. Originally isolated from thymus and assumed to be a thymic hormone its primary role is now recognised as being in ATP-dependent protein degradation.
