Antibiotic. Inhibits protein synthesis (elongation) by interfering with peptidyl tRNA translocation. Effective against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (Gonnococcus only). Mutation in rpsE (the gene for ribosomal protein S5) prevents binding of spectinomycin.
