Chemical inducer of autophagy which acts via an mTOR-independent mechanism. It increased autophagosome synthesis and enhanced the clearance of model autophagy substrates such as A53T α-synuclein and mutant huntingtin fragments. It reduced Aβ peptide and AAP-CTF levels in an Alzheimers model and attenuated mutant huntingtin-fragment toxicity in Huntington’s disease models, suggesting therapeutic potential.
