The saikosaponins have potent anti-inflammatory activity on mouse ear edema induced by the tumor promoter, phorbol myristate acetate. In cell culture studies, they have been found to induce differentiation without growth inhibition and apoptosis in B16 melanoma cells. Saikosaponin D was found to stimulate corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) gene expression and CRF release. It also increases adrenocorticotropin release.
