A serine/threonine kinase that mediates apoptosis was identified and designated ZIP kinase [1]. ZIP kinase contains a N-terminal kinase domain and a C-terminal leucine zipper structure and binds to ATF4, a member of the ATF/CREB family. ZIP kinase has high sequence homology with DAP kinase (death-associated protein kinase), which is a mediator of apoptosis induced by γ-interferon. Overexpression of ZIP kinase induces apoptosis. The mRNA is ubiquitously expressed in various tissues [1]. ZIP kinase phosphorylates the regulatory light chain of myosin II (MRLC) at both Ser19 and Thr18 in Ca2+/calmodulin independent manner [2].
