Fluorescent analogue (Ex(max): 480nm; Em(max): 548nm) of the siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFO), coupled to 7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD). High-specific Fe3+ hydroxamate indicator/chelator. Its fluorescence is quenched by Fe3+ ions, i. e. it is fluorescent only when unferrated and can thus be used as a probe to follow iron removal from the siderophore. The lipophilic siderophore, which demonstrates excellent permeation across membranes can be used for detecting iron ions in cell-free systems, for recording the transport of iron into microorganisms and plants, for detecting pathogenic microorganisms and for monitoring Fe3+ mobilization from cells.
