Lipids play an important role in human homeostasis. They serve as structural components of cell membranes, organelles and tissues, function as energy storehouses and also act as signaling molecules. Lipids are sensitive to oxidation by reactive oxygen species. Lipid peroxidation is a metabolic process that causes degradation of various lipid molecules by reactive oxygen species thereby resulting in cell damage and eventually, cell death. Lipid peroxidation occurs in both animals and plants and also in vivo during aging and in certain disease states including atherosclerosis, heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatic arthritis, cancer, and other immunological disorders. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of the most known secondary products of lipid peroxidation, and is used as a useful biomarker for the assessment of lipid peroxidation. AkrivisBio’s Lipid Peroxidation Assay provides a simple and convenient method for the detection of MDA through its reaction with Thiobarbituric Acid to generate a chromophore. The chromophore is then quantified colorimetrically at 532 nm or fluorometrically at Ex/Em = 532/553 nm.
