Iron is an essential element involved in many physiological processes including erythropoiesis, immune function, mitochondrial function, electron transport, DNA synthesis and enzymatic reactions, which require iron as a cofactor. The most common structures in which iron is found are the iron-sulfur centers and various hemes. Unlike most other ions whose levels are regulated by both absorption and excretion, iron levels in vivo are controlled solely by absorptive processes. AkrivisBio’s Iron Assay is a simple and direct method for measuring (Fe2+) and/or ferric (Fe3+) iron in samples. In this assay, iron compounds present in samples are optionally reduced to ferrous form (Fe2+), which then reacts with Ferene S to produce a stable chromogen measured at 593 nm. The assay can measure iron in the range of 0-10 nanomoles in a variety of samples.
