Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the NGF family of neurotrophic growth factors and is a prosurvival factor induced by cortical neurons that is necessary for survival of striatal neurons in the brain. It is also required for differentiation of cortical and hippocampal GABAergic interneurons and induces differentiation of dopaminergic neurons and survival of some neuronal cultures. BDNF is expressed as a larger pro form and is cleaved by proteases into its mature form: a 27 kDa dimer formed by two identical subunits.
