Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), also known as serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), is an enzyme found in various tissues, with higher concentrations in the liver and heart. Measurement of AST levels is used to assess liver damage or disease. AkrivisBio’s AST Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure AST activity in a wide range of biological samples with a detection limit of less than 0.02 mU per well. In this assay, AST catalyzes the conversion of aspartate and α-ketoglutarate to produce oxaloacetate and glutamate. Glutamate is then oxidized by glutamate dehydrogenase forming NADH in the process. NADH reduces WST, a readily reducible nearly colorless tetrazolium to a highly colored formazan measured at OD 450 nm.
