AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) is a member of the TGF-β family of genes and has been shown to be present in both males and females. It is known to be expressed in Sertoli cells and is involved in male sexual differentiation. The hormone is present in the ovary of females and has been shown to be a marker of female fertility. AMH was found to inhibit primordial follicle assembly and decrease the initial primordial follicle pool size. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) exhibit elevated levels of Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) which has been found to desensitize ovarian follicles. It has also been shown to inhibit growth of cervical cancer cells via the MIS type II receptor.
