This antibody specifically targets Synacthen (amino acids 1-24 of ACTH) and does not cross-react with CLIP (amino acids 17-39 of ACTH). It effectively stains corticotrophs in the adenohypophysis and proves valuable in the categorization of pituitary adenomas.
ACTH, or adrenocorticotropic hormone, is a a 39 amino acid active peptide hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in the regulation of the adrenal glands and the synthesis of cortisol, a hormone involved in various physiological processes, including the body’s response to stress. ACTH stimulates the adrenal cortex to release cortisol into the bloodstream. POMC (pro-opiomelanocortin or corticotropin-lipotropin) is a 267 amino acid polypeptide hormone precursor that goes through extensive, tissue-specific posttranslational processing by convertases. POMC is cleaved into ten hormone chains named NPP, ACTH, α-MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone), β-MSH, γ-MSH, CLIP (corticotropin-like intermediary peptide), lipotropin-β, lipotropin-γ, β-endorphin and Met-enkephalin.
