Apoptosis induction by TRAIL is triggered via binding to TRAIL-Receptors 1 and 2 on the cell surface. Depending on cell type the amount of these TRAIL-Receptors may vary. In addition, TRAIL-R2 appears to require a higher degree of cross-linking for apoptosis induction than TRAIL-R1. Therefore, for cells such as Jurkat that are TRAIL-R1 deficient, only TRAILs with a high degree of multimerization (i.e. SuperKillerTRAIL™) are capable of efficiently triggering the needed signals for apoptosis induction via TRAIL-R2.
