While whole tissue specimen are sometimes used for long-term storage, most often glass slide-mounted tissue sections are stored at 4°C. Correctly stored slides will be sufficiently preserved for several years. Cryosectioned tissue should be dried and stored at -80°C in a moisture-protected container. Short- and mid-term storage at -20°C is possible, but will significantly reduce shelf life. Formaldehyde-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue can be stored submerged in 100% ethanol at -20°C or dry in a moisture-tight container at -20°C or -80°C. Short- and mid-term storage at room temperature is possible, but will significantly reduce shelf life.
