Typically, cells are induced to undergo autophagy and then stained just prior to analysis. Induction can be as little as an hour or can be performed over days, depending upon the autophagy inducer. Though we have not performed extensive long-term staining studies in live cells, some researchers have found that staining is maintained for at least 24 hours.
