There is no defined answer. Depending on the tissue specimen, target type, and sequence, ISH probes might vary from below hundred base pairs (bp) to several hundred kbp. Most commonly, probes will be in between 200-1500bp for FFPE tissue sections. Additionally, probe size will vary greatly depending whether fragmented probes or intact probes are being used. Fragmented probes, as they are typically generated by nick translation, will result in multiple probes binding to multiple loci with a target sequence much larger than the probes itself. When generating probes by nick translation, we generally recommend to aim for 50-250bp fragments.
